8 Jun 2012

Bike Week - Get Fit and Cycle to the Aquadrome on Saturday 23rd June. Gather in front of the cafe and get free cycle security tagging by the police and free cycle safety checks courtesy of Northwood Cycles. The cycle ride to Denham Country Park led by Spokes, South West Herts Cycling Group, leaves the Aquadrome at 10.30am. It will last about 2 hrs and take you along the Colne Valley to Denham Country Park, mainly on tracks. It is suitable for most people over 10 yrs old but those under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

You probably know that the Time Team have recently visited Northwood Prep School, the site of the 16C Royal Palace where Katherine of Aragon is thought to have lived for a while and it was associated with Cardinal Wolsey and Henry VIII. There have been some new finds, including a silver coin from 1413, ornate Dutch tiles, bones etc. The Team think there is evidence that there were buildings there from the early 12C, and that the palace was more extensive than previously thought. The TV programme is scheduled for next spring, exact date not yet known.

At the end of April, sixteen TRDC officers spent a team building morning doing maintenance work on canal Lock 81, Rickmansworth. This was to assist the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust prepare the area for the Festival. The weather was appalling but they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. British Waterways own the canal and surrounding land but in recent years the Trust has taken on responsibility for this area where their visitor centre is. If anyone wishes to learn more about volunteering round the canal contact Fabian Hiscock. He can be contacted through the Canal Centre on 01923 778382.
